Malware

Malware has recently been making headlines in the news targeting WhatsApp and Windows home users.

Windows home users were subject to websites that promoted fake antivirus and security updates for Windows 10, once downloaded, the files contained JavaScript that infected the device with file-encrypting Malware. Once the device was infected, ransomware operators demanded payment of up to $2,500 for home users to receive a decryption tool that allows them to recover their files.

A new unofficial version of WhatsApp called ‘YoWhatsApp’ is a fully working messenger app that uses the same permissions as WhatsApp. The app includes additional features, such as the ability to customize the interface or block access to chats making it more appealing for users to install the app. The malicious app steals access keys which can lead to account takeover, access to private conversations, and impersonation to close contacts.

What is Malware?

What is Malware?

Malware or ‘Malicious Software’ is a term that describes any malicious program or code that is harmful to systems. Malware seeks to invade, damage, or disable computers, tablets, mobile phones, and networks by taking partial control of the device’s operation system.

The motives behind Malware can vary, it can sabotage your ability to work, make political statements, and take money from you. Malware cannot damage the physical hardware of the systems or network equipment, but it can steal, encrypt, or delete your data, alter, or hijack core computer functions, and spy on your computer activity without your knowledge or permission.

How can I tell if my device is infected with Malware?

Here are a few signs that your device could be infected with Malware:

  • Your computer slows down
  • Your system crashes
  • Your browser settings change
  • Your antivirus stops working
  • Your screen is inundated with ads
  • Sudden loss of disk space
  • Sudden increase in Internet activity
  • You lose access to your files or your entire computer

Although powerful Malware can still hide deep inside your computer without raising any suspicions, that’s why it’s important to have an antivirus program installed on your devices such as Avast.

How do I get Malware?

Anytime you’re online you are vulnerable to Malware; the two most common ways are via the internet and email.

Malware can infect your computer when you access hacked websites, view a legitimate website that has malicious ads, download infected files, install programs or apps from unfamiliar providers, or open a malicious email attachment.

How can I protect my company from Malware?

SNC uses Avast Antivirus or Microsoft Defender for M365 for Premium Users to protect our maintenance customers from malware and other viruses. Even legitimate websites that you think you can trust can contain malware.

We receive a warning email to let us know that a threat has been detected on a device and that the threat has been blocked by Avast. If a threat is found on a device, we will delete the file and do a full scan of the device to ensure it isn’t compromised.
